Segregated Seattle
The language of segregation haunts the cities and suburbs of Washington State. Racist restrictions, although now void, remain in the property records of hundreds of neighborhoods, a toxic residue from the decades when racial segregation and exclusion were allowed, indeed promoted, by local governments throughout the state. This microsite was developed with the Seattle Civil Rights & Labor Project. It explores the sharply segregated history that still haunts Seattle. This research was brought to life through data visualization and an immersive map experience. I encourage you to visit and explore the site to uncover the hidden truth that our homes were built on.
